Here at UGA, we value quality education that nurtures the inquisitive nature of the hundreds of students on our campuses. We like to spread this joy of learning to other students. In partnering with local educators, we go into classrooms to do demonstrations. We show how fun science can be and how useful the classroom material is in the real world. We revive a culture of asking questions. We want to make learning fun for students at all ages!
Outreach Program
UGA Science Olympiad Outreach hopes to promote early interest in the math and sciences in Athens-Clarke County and the surrounding area. We would love for elementary and high schools to be a part of this! Below, you can find some basic information on the elementary and high school outreach program. If your school is interested, we'll send more details your way!
Elementary:
In this program, our members would come once a month during after school hours to bring fun experiments, interactive STEM lessons, and grade level-appropriate Science Olympiad activities/events to your school. Activities may include electric planes and Rube Goldberg machine demonstrations, mini team-based building competitions, and lessons on topics like water quality, the body, and fossils! Essentially, we hope to instill in your students a love for science and encourage them to join their respective Science Olympiad teams when they transition into middle and high school.
High School:
Through this program, we hope to lay a strong foundation for your school’s Science Olympiad team. In order to do so, our members will take on the role of mentors for your school’s team. Our job would include organizing your team’s roster for the Invitational and Regional Tournaments, running practices, and preparing your students for events. In addition to participating in this program, we are also offering to waive your school’s registration fee for our fall invitational tournament. As mentors, we hope to give your team the necessary resources to build a long-lasting Science Olympiad program for years to come.
Other:
If you are not sure if you are able to commit to this level of a program, we are also interested in hosting one-time events or activities with interested students at schools, libraries, or any other locations and functions. These can be fun activities or even lessons on cool science topics. We are also open to your ideas and working with you to develop alternate forms of outreach in which we can help as needed!
